Except where stated, all meetings begin at 7:15 p.m. and are held in St George’s Church Lounge. See the Meetings page for information about the venue of these meetings. Tuesday, 9 September 2008 Organisational meeting. Tuesday, 14 October 2008 A double bill: Neil Booker on Mirror Blanks and Nigel Sheridan on Ancient Astronomy. Both Neil and Nigel are members of the Dumfries Astronomical Society. Saturday, 8 November 2008 Publicity event in the Loreburn Shopping Centre to promote the Society in general and the forthcoming special meeting at the Museum in particular. Tuesday, 11 November 2008 Presentation by Neil Booker on Astrophotography. Saturday, 15 November 2008 Stamp into Space, a special open meeting at the Dumfries Museum, starting at 7:00 p.m. Two illustrated talks are planned, the first on A Light Outburst by DAS member Rachel Findlay, the second by Mrs Morrison on Stamps and Astronomy. Weather permitting, there will be an opportunity to do some stargazing between the two talks. Members of Dumfries Philatelic Society (and anyone else with an interest in philately or astronomy) will be made especially welcome. Tuesday, 9 December 2008 A talk by Chris O'Kane of the Glasgow Science Centre entitled The Pharaoh, the stars and a god called Horakhti, lavishly illustrated with his own photography of Egypt and the night sky, with a little bit of astronomy software thrown in too. Chris and his partner Lorna have been to many Astronomy weekends organised by Alec MacKinnon and our President Mark Toner. Tuesday, 13 January 2009 Quiz Night, taking the International Year of Astronomy 2009 as its theme. Tuesday, 10 February 2009 A talk by Dr Martin Hendry (Department of Physics and Astronomy University of Glasgow) on the subject of Black Holes: Einstein's Cosmic Laboratories Tuesday, 10 March 2009 DAS member Klaus Schiller on Stargazing in Singapore. Tuesday, 7 April 2009 A talk by Dr Lyndsay Fletcher (Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Glasgow) on the Life and Death of Stars. Saturday, 12 April 2009 Yuri’s Night meeting (to be arranged). Tuesday, 12 May 2009 Annual General Meeting.
